Paving the Way for Inclusive Education at Lyceum International Schools by Empowering Support Staff

In the bustling halls of Lyceum International Schools, amidst the daily operations that keep the institution running smoothly, there exists a cadre of unsung heroes: the support staff members. These individuals play a pivotal role not only in aiding academic and non-academic staff but also in providing essential assistance to students, particularly those with special educational needs (SEN).

Recognizing their indispensable contribution, Lyceum Assessments, in collaboration with Nextgen Human Capital Solutions, recently initiated a program aimed at empowering support staff members to better serve students with SEN.

At the heart of Lyceum Assessments’ mission lies a profound understanding that every student, regardless of their challenges, deserves an education tailored to their unique needs. To actualize this vision, a specialised workshop was designed specifically for support staff members. The workshop served as a platform for these dedicated individuals to enhance their communication and coordination skills when working with students requiring special attention.

Through a series of interactive sessions and real-world scenarios, support staff members delved into the intricacies of effectively engaging with students with SEN. Topics ranged from understanding the nuances of each child’s uniqueness to cultivating attentive listening skills, building trust, and knowing how to respond when children are in distress. Unlike traditional lectures, the workshop fostered an environment of dialogue and participation, enabling attendees to share insights and perspectives derived from their own experiences.

The success of the workshop was evident from the overwhelmingly positive feedback received from participants. Many described the session as “enriching and informative,” highlighting its value in enhancing their understanding and approach towards supporting students with SEN. Importantly, the workshop not only provided valuable knowledge but also offered a refreshing departure from the daily routines of support staff members, invigorating them with newfound inspiration and motivation.

Ms. Annja Perera, Head of the Academic Enhancement Center (AEC), emphasized the significance of the workshop in aligning with Lyceum International Schools’ commitment to inclusive education. During her “train the trainer” session, she reiterated the school’s dedication to ensuring that every student receives the support they need to thrive academically and personally.

Under the guidance of Ms. Perera, selected team members from each school undertook the responsibility of conducting the workshop across different branches. Ms. Mayuri Vithange, Ms. Sharifa Usuf, Ms. Akila Rukshini, Ms. Janitha Jayawardhane, Ms. Teckshila Madhumali, and Ms. Shafira Branudeen led the sessions at various Lyceum International School locations, spreading the ethos of inclusive education far and wide.

Beyond being a mere training session, the recent workshop exemplified Lyceum International Schools’ unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education. By equipping support staff members with the necessary skills and knowledge, the school ensures that every student receives the support they need to flourish. As Lyceum International Schools look towards the future, they remain steadfast in their pursuit of initiatives that champion inclusivity and pave the way for a brighter, more equitable educational landscape.
